About This Product

Following an administration of the SPM or SPM-P, the Quick Tips help clinicians develop comprehensive treatment plans for children with sensory processing challenges. Each collection of tips offers item-by-item strategies that promote data-driven intervention to help guide and achieve therapeutic goals. They provide a framework in which clinicians can integrate sensory-based activities into a child’s daily life that are directly based on assessment results. In addition, parent- and teacher-friendly language makes it easy to empower those unfamiliar with sensory integration to become more involved in the treatment process.

Five Main Objectives of the Quick Tips

  1. Address underlying sensory deficits, including modulation, postural control, perception, and praxis
  2. Provide training for staff, family, and peers
  3. Teach self-advocacy
  4. Adapt tasks, materials, equipment, and environment to the child’s needs
  5. Support social participation with cognitive and behavioral strategies

Benefits and Features

  • Offers a framework for therapy based on careful standardized assessment developed from observations across multiple environments
  • Provides a way to measure qualitative progress through staff responses and quantitative progress
  • Offers information in a way that parents, teachers, and others involved in treatment can easily understand
  • Provides valuable information to help practitioners make sound decisions using clinical reasoning and consultation skills
  • Provides a data recording system to monitor progress

Available Formats

The Quick Tips are available in two formats: as an online module on the WPS Online Evaluation System and in print.

The online module offers an unmatched system for measuring qualitative and quantitative progress. Following an online administration of the SPM or SPM-P, you can use the online module to quickly create customized intervention reports that can easily be shared through email or printed. You can filter these reports by sensory processing areas and by item scores.

The print version of the Quick Tips can be used as a quick reference guide in the classroom, in meetings, or at home.

Users and Applications

Primary users of the Quick Tips are occupational therapy practitioners in clinical, school, and community settings who have mentored with a sensory integration (SI) expert and are trained in SI and sensory processing. These practitioners can teach others how to use the Quick Tips, engaging them in the therapy plan. Parents, teachers, school personnel, and other professionals can use the strategies and techniques as long as the practitioner responsible for interpreting administration results provides direction.

The Quick Tips were designed to be used in conjunction with the SPM and SPM-P.

Complementary Resources

The following resources are referenced throughout the Quick Tips and offer a breadth of intervention suggestions for clinicians, teachers, parents, and students. Each is available for purchase at www.wpspublish.com.

One-Day Workshop: SPM Quick Tips

Henry Occupational Services offers a 1-day workshop about the Quick Tips designed for individuals who are proficient in using the SPM and SPM-P assessments. The workshop includes case examples that address clinical reasoning for interpretation and developing sensory-based intervention plans. A demonstration of the mechanics and color-coded sorting is included, as well as how to use the Quick Tips Record Form to record data and monitor program effectiveness. Team collaboration is emphasized in the workshop. Issues including sensory seeking and motor planning are addressed and how to use the Sensory Songs for Tots music CD in therapy.
