About This Product
BY WAYNE P. HRESKO, SHELLEY R. HERRON, PAMELA K. PEAK, AND DEANNA L. HICKS
The TEWL-3 is a revision of one of the few measures of written language expression in children. Now suitable for individual assessment with children ages 4-0 to 11-11, it is grounded in current research on developing literacy abilities. Because research has shown that mechanics and content are equally important to overall literacy aptitude, these areas are equally assessed.
Two equivalent forms are included, each with Basic Writing and Contextual Writing subtests, so you can easily monitor a child's improvement by retesting. The subtests can be administered independently or together to measure the child's overall writing ability.
Basic Writing Subtest
This subtest includes 70 items in order of increasing difficulty. It measures a child's understanding of language and ability to use writing tools including metalinguistic knowledge, directionality, organization structure, awareness of letter features, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, proofing, sentence combining, and logical sentences.
Contextual Writing Subtest
This subtest includes 20 items measuring a child's ability to create a story when prompted by a picture. It covers story format, cohesion, thematic maturity, ideation, and story structure.
The TEWL-3 takes 30-50 minutes to administer and provides raw scores, age and grade equivalents, normal curve equivalents, and percentiles. Index scores are also available for Basic Writing, Contextual Writing, and Overall Writing (for children who complete both writing subtests and are at least 5 years old).
Age and grade norms are provided, based on a sample of 2,085 children from the United States and Canada, representative in terms of geographic region, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and exceptionality.
The TEWL-3 gives you a clear profile of strengths and weaknesses in written expression. The provision of two equivalent forms makes it easy to retest youngsters and track their progress.
